A native of a small town outside of Philadelphia, Phillye was born into a musical family. Her father played guitar in the church, her brothers played instruments and went on to become successful as well, and her mother sang jazz at various local venues as well as solos in the Church. Jam sessions were a regular event in the Smith Home.
Sonya Smith being her birth name, she was given the name Phillye by a famous producer who told her, “Your name is now Phillye because you’re a fine Philly from Philadelphia”. This name stuck. Phillye recently relocated to Kingston Jamaica for the love of reggae music, and immediately began working on her album with producers like reggae royalty Sly and Robbie, Bassman “Gideon Base”, Eric “Don Rico” Dixon, Owen “Bassy” Rennals, and to name a few. She has recently released her latest single “Live Ur Life” which encourages people, both youthful and mature, to follow their heart, not the crowd and love to oneself. Her freshman single, “It’s all up to you”, a Dancehall/R&B tune featuring one of Jamaica’s up and coming Dancehall artists, Raw Raw, did well on Myspace, grossing over 300,000 plays. Jah Jah light is the title of her follow-up single. Phillye’s style is a blend of R&B and Reggae mixed with heartfelt lyrics about life, love, heartbreak, overcoming and starting over; it truly bridges the gap with soulful melodies that’s missing from today’s music.
Phillye’s poetic experience peeps its head through all of her songs. In every phrase there is a story that everyone can identify with. She opens up herself in all of her verses and enlightens. Her music is about love, life, or the pursuit of happiness. From young to old, you will be certain to find something that you can identify with and learn from after you have been in her musical presence. Sure to woo you with her warm personality, positive presence and sultry voice, Phillye is an artist on the rise, someone to watch, a singer to love!
